Center for Chinese Financial Development and Reform

The Center for Chinese Financial Development and Reform strives to contribute to policy discussion in the Chinese financial development and reform. Funding of this center is generated from the financial surplus of the self-financed MBA Program in Finance in collaboration with Tsinghua University. The Center supports both teaching and research excellence to further strengthen and enhance the program content. High quality research which combines theories in the East and the West incorporated with the Chinese practice will be conducted to address and tackle real problems in the business world. The Center also nurtures young researchers by setting up in Shenzhen an incubator program where young mainland Chinese scholars are nominated and invited to collaborate with our Faculty members on various research initiatives.

Recent research projects:

  • Asian Banks Competitiveness Ranking Report, starting from 2007

The Center for Chinese Financial Development and Reform of CUHK has been conducting the “Asian Banks Competitiveness Ranking Report” in the fourth consecutive year in collaboration with Peking University, Graduate School of the People’s Bank of China and Shanghai Jiaotong University. The report is highly recognized by the regulatory body, senior management of the bank and research expert of the field. The center took lead to define and set up the database and benchmarking (including profitability score by calculating the returns on average equity, a list of objective characteristics and a questionnaire to investigate subjective factors), which are further adjusted and perfected by scholars and experts from Beijing, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Research findings and the ranking are announced in the “Annual Asian Finance Summit” held in Beijing in November every year.
