| Background |
The Chinese University of Hong Kong Center for Entrepreneurship was inaugurated on May 24, 2005 and is a research center under the Asia Pacific Institute of Business (APIB). The Group is an interdisciplinary association of scholars united by the research, teaching and community service in promoting entrepreneurship. Professors Kevin Au and Bee-leng Chua of the Management Department, Hugh Thomas of the Finance Department and Wong Kam Fai, Professor of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management are the core members. Prof. Kwok Siu Tong was instrumental in launching many initiatives which led to creation of the Center. In addition to this core group, more than 15 faculty members from across nine university departments are involved in the Center's activities.
The Center closely cooperates with the university's Research and Technology Administrative Office and the Center for Innovation and Technology (CINTEC), the Hong Kong Government's Department of Trade and Industry, Hong Kong Science and Technology Park, the Shenzhen Academy of Social Sciences and many entrepreneurs and venture capitalists in the Pearl River Delta. |

Vision |
Objective |
To understand, document and promote entrepreneurship in Hong Kong, the Pearl River Delta, Greater China and the world through research, education and practice and, in the process, to establish The Chinese University of Hong Kong as a global leader in entrepreneurship research and education.
Our vision is to advance understanding of entrepreneurship in China and Hong Kong. Entrepreneurship is an attitude that predisposes a person to action. Entrepreneurs ceaselessly search for potential value creation and organize businesses to create value. Because entrepreneurship - in both new and existing enterprises - contributes to economic growth and social development, we believe that it should be understood and promoted as a vital part of business education to understanding entrepreneurship.
The Center pursues research, education and practice in entrepreneurship. We bring together scholars from different departments within the University, attract talent from the business community, involve CUHK in promoting entrepreneurship in Hong Kong, and provide a nexus for fundraising.
CUHK has a very respectable record of research on entrepreneurship. The Center will increase our focus on research in entrepreneurship in two areas: (1) the nature and effects of entrepreneurship and (2) the Chinese entrepreneurial heritage.
The Center's main research on contemporary entrepreneurship is conducted with the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, an international collaborative research project, started in 1999, including over 40 countries, headquartered at the London School of Business, and dedicated to describing and analyzing entrepreneurial processes. |
| We coordinate with the Shenzhen Academy of Social Science and liaise with leading Chinese universities in the field of entrepreneurial research. We disseminate research results not only to researchers but also to entrepreneurs and those responsible for entrepreneurship policies in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and China. |
Hong Kong has many entrepreneurs who made their fortunes making Hong Kong a great city. They constitute a glorious page in the history of China, yet their stories remain largely untold. The Center is making a virtual Hall of Entrepreneurship on its website. We have identified prominent older generation entrepreneurs and are posting our secondary research concerning their accomplishments. We hope to develop the Hall of Entrepreneurship into a physical facility for the University and the business community.
The Center's education program enhances and expands the university's current offering of courses in entrepreneurship. Our activities include seminars, workshops, and visits to entrepreneurial ventures. We enable students to meet and interact with entrepreneurs who can act as positive role models for those considering entrepreneurial careers. The speakers at our workshops and seminars have experience in new venture creation, venture capital and financing, consulting, intellectual property, marketing, and social and corporate entrepreneurship.
We aim to deliver training for executives wishing to use an entrepreneurial approach to foster innovation, creativity and business development in their enterprises.
We seek new opportunities to work with the business community to help our members and CUHK students and faculty learn about entrepreneurship |
The Center helps students plan new companies that create value by satisfying market needs. We encourage students, faculty, alumni and members of the community to form multi-disciplinary teams.
We organize the Vice Chancellor's Cup of Student Entrepreneurship in which competing teams of CUHK students present their business plans to venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and managers of government start-up capital funds. We help with the Vice Chancellor's Cup of Student Innovation, a concept-to-product technology competition organized by CUHK. Winners of these competitions represent CUHK in national and international competitions. |
| We encourage students to enter their plans in open international competitions and sponsor part of their travel costs. At these competitions, students interact with entrepreneurs, investors, professionals and peer students, increasing their understanding of the global entrepreneurial environment. |
In recent years, several former competitors have started their own companies on graduation. Students may apply through the Center for incubation facilities at the Centre for Innovation and Technology (CINTEC) in the Faculty of Engineering.
The Center collaborates with Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH) to run the BAH Social Venture Challenge, in which MBA students plan ventures to meet needs of non-profit organizations. By applying entrepreneurial value creation to social problems, the Center aims to instill social awareness and responsibility for our community in our students.
