According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2009 Hong Kong and Shenzhen Study conducted by the Centre for Entrepreneurship of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), early stage entrepreneurial activity rate in Hong Kong and Shenzhen (including setting up new companies and managing firms less than 3.5 years old) has dropped dramatically compared with previous studies conducted in 2007 and 2004. Figures also show that both entrepreneurs and investors in Hong Kong are quite pessimistic towards the business outlook in near future. Only 14% of the Hong Kong population thinks there will be good opportunities in the coming six months, nearly 70% drop from 2007.
GEM is a research consortium founded by Babson College, USA, and London Business School, UK. The study covers more than 55 countries and measures global entrepreneurial activities. The CUHK Center for Entrepreneurship takes lead of the Hong Kong and Shenzhen study to benchmark start-up activity against other parts of the world. |
