Research Ranking

  • In a ranking of management journal publications made by University of Texas-Dallas (http://citm.utdallas.edu/utdrankings/home.aspx), faculty members have published a total of 37 articles in six key management journals (AMJ, AMR, ASQ, SMJ, JIBS, and Org Science) for the year 2003 to 2007, with a weighted score of 16.96.  This score ranked 75 in the world, the fourth among all Asian universities. According to the same source, CUHK ranked 1st worldwide for publications (in article counts) in Journal of International Business Studies, a top international business journal, during the period 1995-2008.

  • According to an article by Podsakoff and others in the Journal of Management, vol. 34, no. 4, August 2008 (table 5, page 663), CUHK is ranked number 49 in “citation ranking” in five years(2000-2004) in 30 management journals.  
  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong is ranked first in international business research by the International Business Review in 2006. The ranking is based on the greatest number of articles appearing in four leading international journals from 1995 to 2004 (The Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of World Business, the International Business Review, and Management International Review).
  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong is ranked fourth worldwide and the first in Asia in international business research by Management International Review, a leading international business journal based in Germany.  The survey ranked the productivity of business schools based on the total number of articles published in three top international business journals including Management International Review, Journal of International Business Studies and Journal of World Business between 1996 and 2000.
  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong is ranked 6th globally based on publications in Journal of International Business Studies (1990-2002), a leading international business journal.  For representation on international business journals editorial boards in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002, The Chinese University of Hong Kong is ranked 29th worldwide.
  • The Journal of International Management ranked The Chinese University the top-contributing university in Asia, and 18th worldwide, in the area of international strategic management over the ten-year period of 1991-2000.

Faculty Members' Research Achievements

  • Prof. Kevin Au was selected as the first recipient of Young Researcher's Award  of the Faculty of Business Administration in 2003.
     
  • Prof. Hui Chun was selected as the recipient of the Young Researcher's Award  of the Faculty of Business Administration in 2007.
     
  • Prof. Kenneth Law was selected as the one of the recipients of the University's Research Excellence Award  in 2006-2007.
     
  • A paper on "Asset exploitation versus asset seeking: Implications for location choice of foreign direct investment", published at Journal of International Business Studies by Prof. Shige Makino, Chung-Ming Lau and Ryh-Song Yeh was awarded the JAIBS Award of the Year (paper division) by Japan Academy of International Business Studies, 2003, Tokyo.
  • Prof. Shige Makino was selected as one of the recipients of the University's Research Excellence Award in 2007-2008.
  • Prof. Shige Makino was selected as the recipient of Young Researcher's Award of the Faculty of Business Administration in 2006.
  • Prof. Shige Makino’s paper with Christine M. Chan, Takehiko Isobe, and Paul W. Beamish, titled “Intended and unintended terminiation of international joint ventures” was selected as for the Best Paper Award in the 2006 Conference of the Asia Academy of Management.
  • Prof. Shige Makino was ranked the 19th most prolific researcher in international strategic management research by a paper (by Jane W. Lu) titled "The evolving contributions in international strategic management research", in Journal of International Management, 9:193-213, 2003.
  • Prof. Shige Makino (with Andrew Delios) was selected as winner of the Eldridge Haynes Prize for Best Paper by Academy of International Business, 2002, Puerto Rico.  The paper was titled, "Bunched foreign market entry: Competition and imitation among Japanese firms, 1980-1998".
  • Prof. Shige Makino was a Finalist of the Barry M. Richman Best Dissertation Award (International Management Division) at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, 1996.
  • Prof. Shige Makino was selected as a Finalist of the Best Canadian PhD Dissertation Award in Administrative Sciences by the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada, 1996.
  • An article on "Loyalty to supervisor and trust in supervisor workers in Chinese joint ventures: A test of two competing models" written by Dr. Yui-Tim Wong, Prof. Chi-Sum Wong and Prof. Hang-Yue Ngo of the Department was selected as one of the best 50 management articles by Emerald Management Reviews in 2002.  Dr. Yui-Tim Wong is a PhD graduate of the Department and the selected article is based on his doctoral dissertation.
  • Prof. Daphne Yiu  was a Finalist of the Barry M. Richman Best Dissertation Award (International Management Division) at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, 2003.  Prof. Yiu was a graduate of the Department's MPhil Program in 1997.
     

Graduate Students' Research Achievements

  • Christine Chan (PhD, 2002) received The Barry M. Richman Best Dissertation Award (International Management Division) at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, 2003.  She was also winner of the Best Paper Award (International Management Division) at the same Academy Meeting.
     
  • Christine Chan was awarded the Research Distinction Prize by the Japan Academy of International Business Studies in 2002.
  • Christine Chan represented The Chinese University of Hong Kong at the PhD Consortium in Hong Kong and was winner of the Best Presenter Award in 2001.
     
  • Raymond Loi (current PhD student) was recipient of the Award for the Best Research Output by Research Post-graduate Students 2004 of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
  • Steven Lui (PhD, 2000) was a Finalist of the AIB Best Paper Award at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of International Business, 2004.
  • Thomas W.H. Ng (MPhil, 2002) was winner of Careers Division Best Overall Paper Award at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, 2004.
     
  • Ren Bing (a current PhD student of the Department) represented The Chinese University of Hong Kong and was winner of the Best Paper Award at the PhD Consortium in Taiwan, 2002.
  • Wei Liqun (PhD, 2004) represented The Chinese University of Hong Kong and was winner of the Best Paper Award at the PhD Consortium in Shanghai, 2003.
  • Wei Liqun (PhD, 2004) was winner of the Best Paper Award at the 8th Annual Conference of Chinese Talents Research Institute held in Kuming, 2002.
  • Daphne Yiu (MPhil, 1997) was a Finalist of the Barry M. Richman Best Dissertation Award (International Management Division) at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, 2003.
