Center for Hospitality and Real Estate Research

The Center for Hospitality and Real Estate Research (CHRER) serves as a base for generating cutting edge research to shape the hospitality field, and to conduct locally relevant applied research projects that will directly benefit the hospitality industries in Hong Kong. It also serves as a bridge between academia and industry.

Current research projects include:

  • Global Star Rating Systems for Hotels
  • Hedging Weather Risk - the Design, Pricing and Application to Hong Kong Theme Parks
  • Institutional Holdings and Monday Effect in Tourism Stocks
  • Macao Casino Industry and Hong Kong Pathological Gamblers - A Social Marketing Study for Responsible Gambling
  • Momentum and Overreaction in Tourism Stocks
  • Professionalism and Service Quality in Hospitality and Tourism
  • Strategic Human Resource Management and Organizational Performance in the Asia Hospitality Industry: The Mediating Influence of Flexibilities in Human Resource Competencies
  • The Role of Tourism in Restructuring the Economy - the Case of HK
  • Total Quality Management in Services - Hotel Sector
  • Ethnicity and Modernization in Tourism Site Development

In addition to conducting research, the Center disseminates research findings and conducts applied research for the hospitality industry. In January 2001, CHRER organized together with the Hospitality Research Center at the Cornell Hotel School a CU2 Joint Conference on Hospitality and Tourism in Hong Kong. In March 2003, CHRER held a Tourism Forum: Charting Strategies for Developing Hong Kong as a Tourist Destination. This was one of the major events in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the University. The Forum was attended by over 200 leaders of the hospitality industry, government policy makers, educators and students. In July 2005, the Center held the K. Wah Hotel and Tourism Forum: Hotel Investment 2005. Some 300 professionals and scholars gathered at the forum to exchange their expertise and views. K. Wah Group sponsored this event to celebrate their 50th anniversary. In 2007, the Center co-sponsored the 12th Asian Real Estate Society (AsRES) Conference held in Macau from July 9 to 12.

The CHRER is also working closely with the industry to organize executive development programs. We conducted both open and company specific workshops and programs. Workshops topics include Yield Management, Entrepreneurship, Managing the Service Profit Chain, and Marketing Management. We also conducted a series of simulation-base programs, including the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Management Simulation (CHARMS) Program, Competitive Hospitality Education Simulation Series (CHESS) Program, and the Cornell Restaurant Administration Simulation Exercise (CRASE) Program.

In order to facilitate more timely exchange of ideas and news among scholars and executives, CHRER has launched the SHTM Newsletter in 2006.
