Introduction

The emergence of Hong Kong as a leading regional financial centre has created a huge demand for personnel and specialists well trained in the field of finance and investments. To cater for this continuing demand, the Department of Finance at CUHK offers courses that cover a wide spectrum of areas encompassing Corporate Finance, Investments, Financial Markets and Institutions, International Finance, Real Estate Finance, Risk Management and Insurance, Mergers and Acquisitions and Derivative Securities.

The Department, in addition to hosting various courses in the Business Faculty's Integrated BBA Programme (which offers two finance concentrations, one in general finance and the other in financial engineering), offers two undergraduate degrees: the B.Sc. in Quantitative Finance and the BBA in Insurance, Financial and Actuarial Analysis (IFAA). The Quantitative Finance Programme began in 1998/9 and the IFAA in 2002/3. These offerings are complemented by the Department's active participation in all of the Faculty's MBA programmes as well as our highly successful M.Sc. Programme in Finance which took in its thirteenth intake in 2007/8. We also service a highly popular Graduate Diploma in Finance Programme.  In addition, the Department offers PhD and MPhil Programmes in Finance.

Through our well-designed and specialized training programmes, the Department of Finance aims to equip students with the essential analytical skills to tackle current financial issues and to prepare them for applying financial theory to real-world financial problems.

Department faculty members are also actively engaged in cutting-edge research in the finance field. A number of colleagues in recent years have published in top-tier journals in this field. The research endeavours of faculty members are also often related to local markets, thus reflecting the Department’s and University’s mission to encourage research and researching in the China field.

We would also like to highlight two major developments that the Department of Finance has been actively engaged in.  The first one relates to the creation of a new research centre – namely the Centre of Economics and Finance – which represents a joint initiative between the Economics and Finance departments at CUHK.  Its essential mission is to promote high calibre, cutting-edge research in relation to mainland and emerging market economies.  More on the background of the Centre can be gleaned by referring to the icon/link to the Centre’s website http://www.baf.cuhk.edu.hk/research/cef/.

The second major development concerns the Department's role as host for the recent 2007 Asian Finance Association Conference.  As the premier conference of its kind in Asia, the Department was honoured to represent the University in this critical endeavour.
