Series of Career Exploration Seminars gave insights
to students on career aspirations

Feedback from final year students indicates that they are in need of more exposure to various industries to help them establish career objectives. Junior students, on the other hand, need more information on different business sectors to make well-informed decision on their choice of concentration areas. In view of these, UGO organized a series of Career Exploration Seminars that cover a wide range of industries which are of interest to business undergraduates.

On January 17, 2005, "Career Exploration Seminar ¡V Finance with Alumni" was successfully held with the tremendous support from CUBA alumni including Mr. Alex Shiu (BBA 1990), Chairman of BBA Alumni Association of CUHK and Senior Manager (investment and securities) of Guangzhou Investment Company Ltd, Mr. Ernest Luk (MKT 1989), Managing Director (China) of Starbucks Coffee International, Mr. Franky Wong (BBA 1991), Senior Vice President ¡V Investments of Prudential Bache Securities (HK) Ltd and Mr. Barry Chan (FIN 1989), Senior Manager of the Listing Division at Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. Students found the seminar extremely useful in terms of shared personal experience, advice and career paths given by the alumni.

On January 29, 2005, "Career Exploration Seminar ¡V Financial Analysts with Hong Kong Society of Financial Analysts (HKSFA)" was organized especially for students interested in pursuing a career in the field of finance. Professionals in the field were invited to share details of their areas of expertise and talk about career prospects in their specialized areas.

Mr. Karl Lung, Vice President of HKSFA was the keynote speaker and he gave an overview of the financial sector. He was followed by Mr. Antony Lai, an investment analyst from ABN AMRO Asset Management (Asia) Ltd. who talked about his duties as an investment analyst. Mr. Richard Boutland from HSBC Private Banking then talked about his career in wealth management. The seminar was then concluded by an introduction of the Chartered Financial Analysts Program given by Mr. Henry Chua, Head of Communications, Asia Pacific, CFA Institute.

Because Human Resources Management (HRM) has become more and more important in the business sector and is even recognized as an essential role in developing and executing organizational strategy, UGO tailored a "Career Exploration Seminar ¡V HRM with Hong Kong Institute of Human Resources Management (IHRM)" on February 18, 2005 for students with a concentration area in HRM.

Ms Carrie Chau, General Manager of IHRM hosted the seminar and discussed with students the recent development of HRM and the promising career prospects of human resources executives in Hong Kong, China and Macau. The discussion was then followed by an experience session hosted by a 2001 CUBA HRM alumnus, Ms Vitinie Wong, an Human Resources Officer at Bank of China Credit Card. Students were well-briefed about the qualities and qualifications required in order to become human resource professionals.

As business students are well aware, the rapid development of the logistics industry in Hong Kong which makes the city famous for being the regional hub of logistics, gave the UGO the opportunity to invite Mr. Thomas Yip, Council Member, Hong Kong Logistics Association (HKLA), to talk at "Career Exploration Seminar ¡V Logistics with HKLA" on February 26, 2005. He gave an overview of Supply Chain Management and Logistics industries in Hong Kong and its development trends, the job opportunities in Hong Kong and Mainland China and more importantly, the qualities and accreditations needed for business graduates who want to be Supply Chain Management and Logistics professionals.

As the last seminar of this year's series, "Career Exploration Seminar ¡V Marketing with the Chartered Institute of Marketing Hong Kong Branch (CIMHK)" (March 14, 2005), Dr. Stephen Ho, Chairman, Education Committee, CIMHK and Ms Alyson Mar, Senior Vice Chairman, CIMHK were the speakers at this particular seminar. Participating students with and without a marketing concentration area were given the most updated information of the marketing industry including job opportunities for graduates in Hong Kong and Mainland China, and were tipped on the attributes that prospective employers are looking for in terms of entry-level positions in the field.
