EAS Information Session - A Good Turn-out

On a bright and sunny Sunday morning, a group of 26 student ambassadors from the five Major programmes waited eagerly for the arrival of 6th formers from secondary schools from all over the HKSAR. It is a change of role for these CUHK EAS students who, just one or two years ago, were facing the same situation, contemplating various options and choices in university education.

Just two days ago, on January 20, 2005, JUPAS announced the eligibility of students that are admissible under the Early Admissions Scheme. Eligibility remains unchanged from last year's: grade A in 6 HKCEE subjects including one language subject. JUPAS has pushed forward the admission process which is starting earlier than for it did for 2004. The three tertiary institutions permitted to accept EAS students held information sessions in late January and studentsˇ¦ application deadline is on February 2, 2005. Interviews will be conducted in late February early March (CUHK interviews will be held on February 26 and 27, 2005) and results will be announced on the JUPAS web on April 2 for acceptance by April 6 at the latest.

The Information Session organized by the Faculty was held in the morning of January 23, 2005 (Sunday) before the afternoon University-wide session. To promote the event, the Undergraduate Office sent invitation letters and flyers to principals in over 500 schools, followed by emails to career masters in our database. CUHK and BA faculty websites, and rolling banners were updated; announcements were posted on education sites frequented by secondary students such as Hok Yau Club and HK Education City. News about the BA Faculty Information Session was carried by three local newspapers: The Sun, Hong Kong Economic Journal, and Metro.

Participants listened to Prof. Gordon Cheung, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies), who gave an overview of the BA Faculty in the opening seminar at 10:15 am . In his presentation, Prof. Cheung emphasized the long tradition and heritage of CUHK in business education, with its reputation built on academic excellence in both research and teaching. Throughout their university years, EAS students are involved in a series of enrichment and development programmes to sharpen their soft skills and to make them more international: OBSA (Outstanding Business Students Academy), Study Abroad, Career Exploration Seminars, Summer Internship, Alumni Mentorship, Overseas Exchange, etc. Students are encouraged to make full use of these initiatives in order to prepare themselves for faster and better integration into the workplace upon graduation.

In order to provide participants with more in-depth information about individual Major programmes, two sessions were scheduled after the Faculty Seminar. On hand to speak to the students were Prof. Gordon Cheung on Global Business Studies, Mr. Jimmy Chiu on Integrated BBA, Prof. Gladie Lui on PAC, Prof. Albert Wong on IFA, Prof. Dennis Fan on QFN, and Prof. Eliza Tse on HMG.

Throughout the morning, student ambassadors were very much sought after by eager 6th Formers who had loads of questions to ask about such as hostel space, choice of programmes, colleges, etc. The discussions continued well into lunch when most of the participants stayed behind to join our student ambassadors and professors in New Asia Canteen. At 1:30 pm, hired coaches took the participants to the Engineering Building where the university-wide EAS information session was held.
