Consumer Banking Seminar Attracted a Full House (December 2, 2004)

The "Development Trends and Career Prospects for Graduates in Consumer Banking" Seminar was organized jointly by the University's Career Planning and Development Centre (Career Centre) and the Undergraduate Office on December 2, 2004.

The aims of this seminar, particularly in the field of consumer banking, was to provide students with first-hand information about the kind of career opportunities open to them in the fast growing consumer banking industry. The seminar started with an inspiring opening remark by Prof. Leslie Young, Chairman of Department of Finance, which was then followed by a presentation of souvenirs to the guest speakers by Prof. K. H. Lee, Director of School of Hotel and Tourism Management and Mr. Tom Fong, Head of the Career Centre.

One of the speakers, Ms Teresa Law, Vice President, Human Resources, Citibank N.A., said that graduates cannot afford to miss the wide range of opportunities offered in fields like personal financial consultancy, wealth management, financial planning, etc.

The banks HR executives also emphasized the importance of professional qualifications. They reminded our students to complete important examinations such as Certified Financial Planner (C.F.P.), Hong Kong Securities Institute Licensing Examinations, and Insurance Intermediary Qualifying Examinations before they can succeed in their careers.

Hosting the seminar were eight leading commercial banks including:
  • Bank of America
  • Belgian Bank
  • Citibank N.A.
  • Dah Sing Bank
  • DBS Bank (HK) Ltd
  • Hang Seng Bank
  • HSBC
  • Standard Chartered Bank

The seminar was attended by 153 students, which filled every seat in the lecture theatre in the new William M. W. Mong Engineering Building. There were 87 BA undergraduates and 14 MBA students. Many students stayed behind after the seminar to talk with the guests. Seeing such encouraging attendance, Career Centre and the Undergraduate Office fully grasped the area of interest and needs of students and will organize similar career seminars in the future.
