Alumni and Students Learn the Essence of Mentorship

HONG KONG - More than 40 alumni and 130 year 2 business undergraduates joined the two kick-off ceremonies jointly hosted by the Undergraduate Office, and Lau, Wong & Associates Consultants Limited in September and October 2004.

Both ceremonies took the form of mentorship skills workshops in an effort to help both alumni and students understand the meaning of "mentoring". The alumni were expected to gain "how to" skills in coaching and mentoring youngsters while students were taught how to interact effectively with superiors and how to make the most of a mentorship experience within a specified time frame.

Each alumni mentor was matched with three to four students by linking up the type of industry and profession of the alumni member with students interested in the same professional area. Through games and exercises at the workshops, group members got to know one another and have agreed on the level of commitment, mode and frequency of interaction as well as the preferred focus throughout the mentoring period.

Background of Alumni Mentorship Programme:

The Alumni Mentorship Programme aims to provide support to business undergraduates in facilitating a smooth transition from university to the business world. In 2004-2005, 64 BA or MBA alumni joined as mentors and 192 year 2 business undergraduates gained from their experience and guidance.

Through this one-year mentoring experience, mentors foster a supportive relationship with the participants and provide guidance as well as share experience in personal and career development needs. Very often, the friendships made between mentors and participants last well beyond that one year.
