Nicholas reflects after having lunch with the guests:
"Although the lunch only lasted an hour and a half, I will never forget what Mr Michael Wong, Professor Andrew C.F. Chan and Mr Ken Lee have generously shared with me.

They are all professionals who demonstrate transcendent leadership in their respective industries. Throughout the conversation, they showed profound business knowledge and insightful understanding of various issues. Mr Ken Lee emphasized that the Hong Kong university students must strengthen their presentation skills and critical thinking ability in order to better position themselves in the increasingly globalized world. His advice reminded me of the importance of continuous effort to look for improvement.

I was particularly inspired by the speakers’ attitudes towards life. ‘Be a man of integrity’, Mr Michael Wong reiterated. He pointed out that a professional or an executive should be able to demonstrate and comply with high ethical standards of his/her profession, particularly when stakeholders have increasing expectations on corporate governance. This is something I will definitely bear in mind.

As a junior, there is a lot to learn from the seniors. I would like to thank Professor Chan and the Faculty for allowing me to join in this fruitful gathering. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Mr Michael Wong and Mr Ken Lee for their invaluable sharing."

    (b) Meeting with Legal Practitioners

Date : 17 April 2009, Friday
Time : 12:45 – 2:00pm
Venue : JW Marriott, Admiralty

Lam Wing Ki, Priscilla (BBA-JD Year 2) joined Professor Andrew C.F. Chan in meeting three legal practitioners: Professor Martin Ko, Mr Victor Lok and Mr Michael Liu. They exchanged views on the landscape of the legal industry and on how students committed to the legal industry can equip themselves to pursue success in their careers. Priscilla shared her reflections with us:

"'Don’t just focus on the present. Plan ahead.' Perhaps it wouldn’t be that surprising to hear these words from a university student; however, how does it sound coming from a Barrister, especially one who is still practicing this advice? Shouldn’t professionals such as himself already be well-versed in the essentials of their professions by their twenties?

The guests at the table emphasized the importance of planning and equipping oneself in this ever-changing society. 'Planning for the next two years is not enough – make plans for the next decade.' Since this advice is easier said than done, they advised me on how to plan for the future by sketching out the various disciplines that a BBA-JD student could pursue upon graduation. I also learned about how current employees view new JD graduates.

The lunch meeting was truly inspiring, as it painted a clearer career path for me and demonstrated the need to be versatile. Indeed, it has motivated me to plan ahead, learn more and strike forth."

    2. Talking to CEOs (organized by the EMBA Programme of CUHK)

    (a) Guest: Mr Stanley Cheung, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of The Walt Disney Company Greater China

Date : 23 April 2009, Thursday
Time : 7:00 – 9:30pm

Chan Pui Man, Rida (Quantitative Finance Year 4) joined Professor Andrew C.F. Chan, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) in meeting with Mr Wilfred Wong, SBS, JP, Executive Deputy Chairman of Hsin Chong Construction Group Ltd, prior to the recording of the RTHK programme “Talking to CEOs”. Rida shared her reflections after attending the radio programme:

"Mr Stanley Cheung has helped different international brands develop continuous business growth for many years and is well-known for his expertise in introducing and expanding consumer brands and products in China. Among the beneficiaries of his assistance are: The Pillsbury Company, Haagen Dazs, WanChai Ferry Chinese dumplings, China Division of Pepsi-Cola International (PCI) and Proctor & Gamble. His next challenge is to work his magic on The Walt Disney Company as an Executive Vice President and Managing Director to the Greater China region. China is of great strategic importance to Disney, so it is no wonder that Mr Cheung wants to contribute to Disney’s long-term growth, which is full of business potential and challenges.

From Mr Cheung's inspiring sharing, a golden rule can be found, which can be applied during hard times around the business beginning or development phase. 'You may never seize a valuable business opportunity if you don't keep a positive attitude when facing challenges. Always try to maximize the benefits and keep challenging yourself instead of just satisfying the current situation. Success is more due to effort rather than luck.' Mr Cheung has proven he can turn difficult situations into opportunities time and time again.

With Mr Cheung's unrivaled list of experiences, I am sure that he can take the lead on driving the company's strategy and coordinating all of Disney's business efforts in China successfully. Not only will he be able to reinforce Disney's brand in the global market, but he will also expand existing businesses and seek out new opportunities."

Rida shared her reflections after attending the radio programme:

"I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the recording of the radio programme. It was very inspiring to listen in on Mr Wilfred Wong's sharing, especially the thoughts that went through his mind during his significant career changes. I'm encouraged by the determination and fortitude he demonstrated when switching from his high-ranking government role to a job in the private sector. Mr Wong also explained his management philosophy, which was extremely beneficial to my future career. He is a charismatic leader and I enjoyed the rewarding discussion between him, Professor Andrew C.F. Chan and the host.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to CUBA, Professor Andrew C.F. Chan and Miss Noel Cheung for the kind invitation, as well as Mr Wilfred Wong for his priceless sharing!"

    (c) Guest: Dr Allan Wong, CEO of VTech

Date : 14 May 2009, Thursday

Lee Nga Chong (Integrated BBA Year 3, with concentrations in Marketing and General Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics) joined Professor Andrew C.F. Chan in meeting Mr Allan Wong, CEO of VTech. Nga Chong shares her thoughts with us:
"'Does an 'Era produce heroes?' or do 'Heroes produce their own eras?'

Dr Allan Wong, CEO of VTech, was the guest of the last episode of 'Talking to CEOs'. As an engineer graduate, Dr Wong declined a position with NCR and joined a few friends, who shared his passion for electronic devices, in establishing a company from scratch. Their unabated interest motivated them to develop innovative products such as a home-TV video game, which was cutting-edge in the 1970s. Today, VTech is a world-renowned company.

When asked why they have been so far-reaching, Dr Wong conceded that it was a product of the times. To capitalize on opportunities, he and his friends were flexible adapted with the times while remaining focused on their long-term goals and interests. Devotion and dedication to your passion allows you to become an expert in your own field, which leads to ultimate success.

Louis Pasteur said it best a long time ago: 'Fortune favors the prepared mind.'"
