Janie wishes to share her reflections:
"Participating in CIMA Global Business Challenge 2009 was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my first year. Entering the Hong Kong regional final was a demanding yet enjoyable opportunity for our team. The company in the case study was fictitious, and this made our work much more challenging since available information was limited. Throughout the many exhausting nights of research and analysis, it was my team’s passion that supported and encouraged me to continue the endeavors. We met almost every day for discussions and rehearsals during the month before the presentation. During the course of this project, our team developed a tacit consensus, which was the main reason behind our victory. Being year 1 students, we believe there is still great room for improvement. Moving on to the global final in Singapore, we aim at acquiring competency by learning from worldwide competitors."

A team of 6 business students — team leader Eric Fan (Quantitative Finance Year 2), Lily Li (MBA), Elaine Tai (Integrated BBA Year 4), Kiki Shek (IBBA Year 2), Nicholas Ho (QFN Year 1) and Henry Keung (Global Business Studies Year 1) — captured the 2nd runner-up place in the YDC Entrepreneurs' Challenge 2009 organized by the Young Entrepreneurs Development Council. |

The CUHK team devised a comprehensive business plan for a healthcare product named ReBone, which would help prevent the widespread disease of steroid-induced osteonecrosis (bone death) in China. The team defeated more than 240 teams from local tertiary institutions with this product. |
| |
| |
Below, team member Henry Keung shares his experience:
"It was truly a rewarding experience. Writing a business plan is entirely different from working on ordinary in-class projects, as enormous weight is given to practical aspects in the preparation process. Through meetings with our mentor we acquired substantial practical knowledge about distribution and the healthcare product market in China, information that would be otherwise impossible to learn about. To our surprise, the panel of judges was exceptionally enthusiastic in giving feedback and we gained far more than just the recognition we received."

The guest speaker this time was Mr Dominic Wu of Nomura Group. At Nomura, he is the Regional Head of Operational Risk, Risk Management and Credit of the Non-Japan Asia region. The majority of the audience was Quantitative Finance students. Also in attendance were three RMS students and a few EAS entrants of the QFN-RMS programme which is jointly offered by the Faculty of Business Administration and the Faculty of Science. |
| |
| |

Leo Chan, Quantitative Finance Year 2 student, shares his experience:
"It was a great pleasure to attend the Heart to Heart Talk held on 18 June 2009. The guest speaker Mr Dominic Wu is the Regional Head of Operational Risk, Risk Management and Credit, for Non-Japan Asia, Nomura International (HK) Limited. His detailed explanation of operation risk, as well as of the development of operation risk management, made me realize the ever growing importance of this role in different companies. I was really fascinated by Mr Wu’s examples regarding how they identify operation risk drivers and adopt a corresponding strategy to strike a balance between maximizing return and maintaining acceptable risks. His professional insight enriched my knowledge and also inspired me to think further about the varying attitudes towards risks in the aftermath of the financial crisis.
| |
| |
Moreover, we were shown a clearer picture of the career life of an Operational Risk Management Manager. This is fundamental to students graduating next year who, like me, need to prepare for their own career path in the future. Overall, it was an absolutely meaningful night and I learned a lot."

Oliver Chan shares her reflections after the talk:
"What do you think are the most important factors of being successful? I used to think that it was mostly ‘luck’ and ‘knowledge’ that determine one’s fate. However, the “Talking to CEOs” programme with guest Mr Bernard Chan has inspired me to think more. From Mr Chan’s examples, I start to think that it is more about our ability to learn rather than how much we already know; perhaps it is also about how much sincerity we treat our tasks and the people around us with rather than how lucky we are."
| |
| |
Only when we have armed ourselves with the right attitudes, capabilities and networks will opportunities (‘luck’) come to us."

"Being able to attend the recording of the radio programme was such a pleasure. I learned a lot from Mr Cheung and his experience in re-opening the Ngong Ping 360 cable car system as well as his general management philosophy. |
| |
| |
In the recording session, Mr Cheung addressed the managerial challenges he faced, including marketing, human resources, public communications and quality management issues. He emphasized the importance of rebuilding public confidence, which in this case translates to providing regular updates through mass media. Employee issues cannot be neglected either. In the programme, Mr Cheung and Professor Chan talked about how the new management had adjusted labour policy and integrated seamlessly with the existing talent in the company.
| |
| |
The re-opened cable car system’s performance was much improved, in terms of passenger throughput and service reliability. However, Mr Cheung said that product innovation is also a key to success. An example of this is the “Crystal Cabin” concept, which, if applied, helps companies retain market share during difficult financial times. Mr Cheung also stressed that instead of competing via cut-throat tactics, companies should cooperate with one another to attract more overall tourism.
| |
| |
The audience really enjoyed the recording, as reflected by their engaging interactions with Mr Cheung. His discussion was really insightful, and he gave me a new perspective on how to handle difficult challenges. All in all, “Talking to CEOs” was a good chance to learn more about the real-life management philosophies of high-ranking corporate leaders. I strongly recommend that all of you listen to it. I would also like to express my gratitude to CUBA and Professor Chan for providing me with such a precious opportunity to learn from Mr Cheung!"

Kayan Leung and Oliver Chan, both coming from Global Business Studies, attend the Hong Kong Social Entrepreneurship Forum. Kayan talks about the valuable experience:
| |
| |
"Social entrepreneurs from organizations including Hua Dan, One Laptop per Child and Carbon Care Asia shared their experiences in bringing about social impact in a commercial way. Hua Dan uses theatre training to help improve the interpersonal skills of the rural Chinese population. One Laptop per Child works at providing simple laptops to Sichuan students, and Carbon Care Asia tries to improve the environment by offering carbon-trading services. All these entrepreneurs are tackling widespread problems like poverty and pollution, but in innovative ways using their own expertise. |
| |
| |
Running a social enterprise is not simply about philanthropy: it requires the combination of passion, expertise and a sound business model. In the forum, participants were all eager to share opinions and give advice to help each enterprise improve. I feel that social entrepreneurship requires the engagement of more and more members to make beautiful ideas possible."
