Tom Chan, QFN-RMS entrant, shares his feeling with us:

"It was a great honor to attend the Heart to Heart Talk held on 7 July. Mr Joseph Pang, Senior Advisor of Bank of East Asia, was the guest speaker that night. Mr Pang shared with us his professional knowledge on a variety of significant financial issues, including Lehman mini-bonds and rumours of capital inadequacy. Not only did he share his unique insights, but he also told us about his life's journey. For example, how do we choose a suitable job for ourselves? What should we be cautious of when working in the office? Or even, how can we take a balance between work life and personal life? These questions were not really related to the banking industry, but were undoubtedly useful for planning our future.

Moreover, Mr Pang was never patronizing during the talk. He was just like our father, sharing wisdom from his 30 years of work experience. Even though we interrupted and asked a lot of questions, he always showed his patience and kindness. Overall, it was definitely an unforgettable and meaningful night for me. I’ve learnt a lot indeed."

    3. Meeting with Business Leaders

    (a) Event: Lunch Meeting with Mr Gilbert Mo, Deputy Law Draftsman of HKSAR, on topic "Career Prospects of Legally Trained Students in Hong Kong"

Date : 21 July 2009, Tuesday
Time : JW Marriot, Admiralty

Sara Sze, BBA-JD Year 2 student, joined Prof. Andrew Chan in meeting with Mr Gilbert Mo, Deputy Law Draftsman (Bilingual Drafting & Administration), Law Drafting Division, Department of Justice, HKSAR, and Dr Thamis Lo, a BBA alumnus. They shared the views on the career prospects of legally trained students in Hong Kong and gave guidance to Sara as regards developing her career in the legal profession.

From left: Dr Thamis Lo (BBA Alumnus), Prof. Martin Ko, Associate Director, BBA-JD Programme; Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies); Sara Sze; Mr Gilbert Mo, Deputy Law Draftsman (Bilingual Drafting & Administration), Law Drafting Division, Department of Justice, HKSAR

Below are the reflections of Sara:

"As a BBA-JD student, I do not know much about the legal field yet. Today's lunch meeting has opened my eyes however.

What do the words 'professional' and 'profession' mean? According to Mr Gilbert Mo, Deputy Law Draftsman of HKSAR, they come from the same root, 'profess'. In ancient Europe, the church played an important role in society and owned most of the properties. To manage the wealth of the church, people needed to profess, and to take solemn religious vows in the process. To be a professional, regardless of what profession you are in, you should have passion and commitment in what you are doing.

Nothing is impossible with a willing heart. Everyone can participate in and contribute to society. Professionalism and social participation are two competitive assets of Hong Kong that will keep us prospering and outperforming the competition."

    (b) Event: Sharing by Business Elites - "Surfing the Financial Tsunami" organized by Quality Tourism Services Association (QTSA)

Date : 14 July 2009, Tuesday
Time : 9:00am – 12:00noon

Hotel and Tourism Management Year 3 student Kelvin Ip Mau Ki attended the forum "Surfing the Financial Tsunami". Four elite business leaders shared their experiences and insights in overcoming the financial tsunami. Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan, who is also an Adviser of QTSA, was invited by the organizer to serve as the guest moderator in the discussion session. He delivered a closing remark as well.

From left: Kelvin Ip and Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan   From left: Kelvin Ip, Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan and Mr Michael Tien, Chairman, The 2000 Group

Kelvin reflects after attending the forum:
"'Whenever there is a crisis, there is an opportunity.' All four speakers could not agree more with this Chinese philosophy when they talked about how their companies have managed to surf through the financial crisis in the annual meeting of the Quality Tourism Services Association (QTSA). Mr Michael Tien, Chairman of G2000, and Mr Simon Kwok, Chairman and CEO of Sa Sa International Holdings Limited, shared the same insight: that leaders can grasp the opportunities during the financial crisis to better equip their companies for long-term success

For example, Mr Tien said that G2000 didn't fire a single person. Instead, they hired better staff, capitalizing on the fact that other companies might be sacrificing their own high quality staff members in order to cut costs. The company also expanded their distribution channels because landlords reduced rent in good locations.

The four speakers truly demonstrated their intelligence, courage and optimistic outlook in the face of the business crisis. I believe graduating students who become frustrated with the current employment situation can learn from the speakers. As long as we remain patient and optimistic, we can take this financial crisis as an opportunity—an opportunity for us to redefine our career goals and prepare ourselves for achieving what we truly want.

As Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan concluded in the meeting, 'Attitude makes the difference between success and failure'. Let us get motivated and work harder for our future."

    (c) Event: Summer Business Institute

Speaker : Mr Stanley Wong,
Director and Deputy General Manager of ICBC (Asia)
Date : 8 July 2009, Wednesday
Start Time

: 2:30pm

Jolly Yip (Quantitative Finance Year 1), Ken Liu (Global Business Studies Year 1), Sunny Chow and Sara Sze (both BBA-JD Year 2) attended the Summer Business Institute organized by the Oriental Daily News. The four business students listened to the presentation of Mr Stanley Wong, Director and Deputy General Manager of ICBC (Asia). He shared his remarkable insights on global economic perspectives and his experience in climbing up the career ladder.

Mr Stanley Wong and the student participants

Jolly Yip (Quantitative Finance Year 1) shared his reflection after attending the Summer Business Institute:
"It was such a pleasure to have Mr Stanley Wong as the guest speaker. He shared with all of us about his career progression, which had been filled with a lot of inspiring incidents and examples that we, as students, could benefit from to a great extent. His determination and integrity primed him for success, something that we all should learn from. Despite his hectic schedule, he spent a great deal of time on nurturing the youth generation, including taking secondary students on study tours in the mainland and holding various discussion forums and seminars with university students. As easygoing and gentle as Mr Wong is, he is definitely a role model for us. I was delighted to have learned so much from him throughout the event."
