"If you are not losing more than 50 percent, you are indeed winning." Mr Or shared his views on the current financial crisis and economy at the Heart to Heart Talk. Since late 2007, after the financial tsunami started, everyone has basically been ’losing’. Some have seen their wealth evaporate in the financial markets, some have lost their jobs, some have found it hard to sustain their retired lifestyle since they invested and lost their money in high-risk investment products. Even university students like us, though we probably did not invest, are facing difficulties, like keen competition in getting jobs. In the talk, Mr Or not only gave us a brief and clear explanation of the cause of the current crisis, but also told us what the impact and implications would be. He believes that after undergoing the crises during the 80's, 90's and also the SARS outbreak, Hong Kong will always overcome, and became even more competitive. Now is no exception. So for us – people who grew up and lived in Hong Kong – we should not be afraid and should not avoid facing this crisis. We should try our best while passing through this difficult time."

Heart to Heart Talk (for GLOBE Students) |
| |
| |
| Topic |
: Globalization – Hong Kong’s Threats and Opportunities |
| Speaker |
: Mr Edward Leung, Chief Economist of Hong Kong Trade Development Council |
| Date |
: 5 January 2009, Monday |
| Time |
: 6:30pm – 8:50pm |
| Venue |
: Room 101, Leung Kau Kui Building and University Guesthouse |
| |
| |
Mr Edward Leung, chief economist of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, was invited to deliver a talk to 75 GLOBE students and some secondary school students. He shared valuable insights and exchanged views with GLOBE students on globalization. GLOBE students from the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) and the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill (UNC) are currently on their trip to study Asian business management and practices at CUHK in this semester. |
| |

Two GLOBE students, Yvonne Tsui and Jeff Hui, wish to share their reflections with us: |
| |
| |
Yvonne Tsui, a year-3 GLOBE student, said, "Globalization has shaped the world in many ways. With the current financial turmoil, it is even more important for Hong Kong to grasp the opportunities and understand the threats brought by turmoil. Mr Leung began the talk with two questions, ‘Will the current financial crisis hinder globalization?’ and ‘Will the recession taking place in some Western countries lead to the rise of protectionism?’ Instead of providing us with the answers directly, he continued by introducing the origin of globalization and gave us various examples illustrating its impact. Mr Leung ended with two questions again, ‘Can China consume more of what it produces and not sell its products cheaply to the USA or other countries?’ and ‘Will the Western countries begin to decrease their consumption rate?’ This talk was truly thought provoking. Mr Leung led us to identify the key questions instead of merely feeding us with some information. Only through asking the right questions can we find a meaningful answer."
| |
| |
Jeff Hui, a year-1 GLOBE student, said,
“Globalization has been shaping the world to an extremely large extent in all dimensions over the past few decades. The opportunities and threats it brings are both tremendous. Hong Kong, being one of the most prominent footholds for foreign investors to enter the Chinese market, has undoubtedly been greatly influenced by the trend of globalization. The Heart To Heart Talk by Mr Edward Leung provided insights that enlightened the audience. The presentation was eye-opening, in that the speaker analyzed the global environment of the business sector. The experience was undoubtedly valuable and equipped the audience with essential knowledge to strive for the best in the era we are in. I am looking forward to attending other Heart To Heart Talks organized by the Faculty to prepare for the future ahead.”

Chung Chun Pong, Johnny (Integrated BBA Year 3, concentration in Management of International Business) participated in a radio programme addressing the said issue. Below are Johnny’s thoughts on the experience: |
| |
| |
“The 'New Thinking in Management' was absolutely wonderful. From the conversation between Prof. Chan and guest speakers, I have realized that corporate social responsibility is a solution for all the stakeholders of a company. It is an important element in setting the long-term strategy of an organization. I was very grateful to be invited to attend the radio programme. It allows me, an undergraduate student, to understand corporate social responsibility from the perspective of top executives who are actually working in the community.” |

| |
| |
Swani Wu, Integrated BBA Year 4 student, was happy to share her thoughts:
“I was very impressed by this interesting topic I just heard today – ‘Health and Management’. Many business people work and think a lot, and it seems like pursuing excellence at work is their only concern in life. This radio show reminded me, on the other hand, that health, including physical, psychological and social health, plays a crucial role in improving work performance. The exercises introduced by Dr Lui and other guests are simple, but very useful for us to practise every day. I believe his comments could be very good references for busy managers who care about both their health and careers.”
