I. Highlight

1. AACSB Welcoming Reception Organized by the Faculty of Business Administration of CUHK (CUBA)

Professor Andrew C.F. Chan, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies), the Convener (Ms. Leonie Ki, SBS, JP, Managing Director of New World China Enterprises Projects Ltd.) and two other Advisory Board Members of Undergraduate Studies in Business (Dr William Ho Shiu-wei, JP, Former Chief Executive, Hospital Authority and Dr John Yeung, OBE, JP, Managing Director of the Cross-Harbour (Holdings) Ltd), colleagues and friends of the UGO, and over 30 students and alumni coming from our undergraduate business programmes of the UGO all attended the AACSB Welcoming Reception.

CUBA has been accredited by the AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) since 1999. Entering the 10th year of our partnership with AACSB, a team of AACSB scholars visited the Faculty in mid February to learn more about the latest developments. The reception, hosted by the Faculty, enabled the visiting team to meet with students, alumni, faculty members and fellow partners who have all along been very supportive and have contributed to the advancement of the Faculty over the years.

II. Students' Achievements

1. CUBA Students Win First Place at the Kogod Gartenhaus Financial Case Competition 2009

Four Global Business Studies Year 2 students — Arnold Chan, Kelvin Chan, Helen Mak and Junes Shek — won first place at the Kogod Gartenhaus Financial Case Competition 2009 in the United States. The case competition was organized by the American University at Washington D.C., and the team competed with 48 teams coming from institutions around the world. Our heartiest congratulations to them!

One of the team members, Helen Mak, tells us what it was like: “The excitement of the competition lies in the fact that the four of us worked together whole-heartedly with absolutely no distraction at all for three whole days. Our minds were flooded with information about South African Sofa the whole time and we randomly threw in new ideas even when we were having a dinner.

We all agreed it was the first time we put so much effort into a competition, from initial brainstorming, to extensive research and endless rehearsal. The reward speaks for itself. Our commitment to the competition and team dynamics allowed us to stand out among our competitors. It was an incredible experience for all of us and we learnt a lot more from the exchange of ideas, from observing our competitors, and from the great feedback we obtained from a pool of over 60 prestigious judges. The networking events of the American University throughout the competition brought us new insights about the Western business culture. I really cherish this experience so much so that in the future I would hope to have the chance to join other overseas case competitions.”

2. CUBA Students Win the Championship in HKFBS Business Administration Paper

A team of four Global Business Studies Year 3 students — Oliver Chan, Ruby Chik, Lily Hui and Kayan Leung — won the Championship in the HKFBS Business Administration of the Year. The team beat more than 200 teams coming from local tertiary institutions and got into the final round. The CUBA team competed against UST, BU and Shue Yan in the final round. With a thorough analysis and outstanding performance, the CUBA team won the Championship in the competition. Our heartiest congratulations!

    2. Heart to Heart Talk

Topic : 逆境自強 (Enhancement in the Face of Adversity
Speaker : Mr Hung Chung Yam (洪松蔭先生), District Director, AIA Company (Bermuda) Ltd, and Former Top Hong Kong Cyclist
Date : 6 February 2009, Friday
Time : 5:00pm – 6:15pm
Venue : LPN LT, Y.C. Liang Hall

Mr Hung Chung Yam shared his touching story with the audience, from his childhood to his life as a “full-time amateur cyclist”. Despite living in an impoverished environment, he never gave up on his dream to become a top cyclist in Hong Kong and go beyond the boundaries. He was persistent in pursuing his goal, many days doing cycling practice from around 5:00am to 8:00pm. Eventually, he represented Hong Kong to participate in international cycling competitions and won many champion titles. His persistence and spirit set him apart as role model for our students. His motto, “turn the corner, continue and you will be there (前面轉彎直行就到)” is encouraging and drives him to overcome difficulties in adverse situations.

A welcoming dinner was arranged after the Heart to Heart talk. It was our honour to have Professor T.J. Wong, Dean of the CUHK Faculty of Business Administration, to deliver the welcoming remarks to the GLOBE students during the welcoming dinner.

Budy Ching, Integrated BBA Year 3 student, shares with us his reflection:

“Success is the result of much effort. I have learnt a great lesson from Mr Hung Chung Yam, who was the Olympic representative of Hong Kong in 1984. He told us about his successful path and a meaningful story. No one can be great without effort. His training, which involves riding around Hong Kong for three hours every day, is astonishing. His sportsmanship, honor and personality are all admirable.”

    3. Elite Mentorship Programme Thank-you Dinner

Date : 4 February 2009, Wednesday
Time : 7:00pm – 9:30pm
Venue : Tang Court, Langham Hotel

To express our gratitude and appreciation to our elite mentors of the mentorship programme for their valuable support and effort, we organized a thank-you dinner on 4 February. During the dinner, the mentors and the mentees shared their feelings and exchanged views about the mentorship programme. We would like to take this opportunity to express our special thanks to Professor Stella So, Convener of the Elite Mentorship Programme, for her unreserved support of the programme, and other elite mentors who were not able to attend the dinner.

The participants of the dinner included:

- Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies)
- Prof. Stella So, Convener of the Elite Mentorship Programme
- Ms Pandora Cheung, Managing Director, Mary Cheung & Associates (International) Ltd.
- Ms Connie Lau, Chief Executive, Consumer Council
- Mr Paul Pong, Managing Director, Pegasus Fund Managers Limited
- Mr Addy W. H. Wong, Managing Director, Centaline Property Agency Limited

A wonderful dinner with professors, elite mentors and elite mentees

Justin Yeung, Global Business Studies Year 3 student, shares his feeling with us:

“I am grateful to have Mr Paul Pong, founder of Pegasus Fund Managers Limited, as my mentor. From this elite mentorship programme, I had the precious opportunity to interact directly and closely with a managing director of one of the largest financial consulting firms in Hong Kong, and someone who does not meet with students normally.

Mr Pong is an energetic and kind mentor. I still remember that in my first meeting with him when I went to his office, he shared his views on the buy-side and sell-side of investment banks with me enthusiastically. Since then, I have developed a passion for investment banks. I have gained firsthand insights into fund management as well as great guidance from him. This has enhanced my personal growth and career-planning ability.

Mr Pong and I are now friends, and we still keep in touch. This elite mentorship closing dinner does not mark the end of our friendship, but a start of the next journey.”

    4. Champion Apprentice Programme

Mr. Paul Kan, Chairman and Founder of the Champion Technology, met with selected students on 11 and 18 January at Cafe Landmark and Shatin Racecourse respectively. Mr. Paul Kan provided the students with valuable insights and constructive advices on business practices and personal developments. The students found the meetings very fruitful and valuable.

Mr Paul Kan (right) with the students

Grace Chu, year 2 BBA-JD student, writes about the meeting:

“It was definitely my honour to be a mentee of Mr Paul Kan. We began our mentor-mentee relationship more than a year ago and I have been learning a lot from him.

Mr Kan is no doubt a busy person, but he still made time to be a responsible and caring mentor. He meets up with us mentees quite often, sometimes as frequent as once a week, which demonstrates his sincerity in maintaining a close mentorship.

As a young adult who still has a lot to learn about society and about life, I have gained a lot of insight from Mr Kan. He shared his experiences and perceptions on different issues with us, and he was eager to give us his advice so that we would not repeat the same mistakes. Moreover, since Mr Kan was a very knowledgeable person himself, our gatherings with him would never be boring — we talked about everything from history to biology to mythology. We’ve come to really understand the meaning of ‘life-long learning’.

But our mentor-mentee relationship does not only rely upon our gatherings. Mr Kan welcomes our contact any time we have problems regarding school, family or anything else in life. The times we contacted through emails and phone calls, he always gave me very useful advice on important decision-making. I am grateful for his teaching, and I believe that I will be able to make decisions for myself in the future without encountering regrets.”

    5. Public Forum on “2009年香港轉變 轉變香港”

Date : 20 February 2009, Friday

Seven CUBA students participated in the public forum on “2009年香港轉變 轉變香港”. The BBA Alumni Association of CUHK was one of the organizers of the pubic forum. Professor Andrew C.F. Chan, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) of the Faculty, was invited to deliver a welcoming remark. The guest speakers of the forum, Professor Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, and Mr Ronnie Chan, Chairman of Hang Lung Properties Limited, shared their valuable insights with the audience.

Vickle Lau, BBA-JD Year 1 student, and Keith Kan, Quantitative Finance Year 1 student, tell us what they learned:

Said Vickle, “The forum was truly a wonderful experience! I was able to acquire insights from two heavyweights in their respective disciplines, which indeed broadened my horizons greatly.

During the first part of the forum, Professor Lawrence J. Lau shared his opinions on Hong Kong’s changing economy. Professor Lau concluded with the history of the economic progress of Hong Kong over the past decades. Afterwards, he projected the future economic development. He illustrated several strengths that Hong Kong could employ to maintain its competitiveness, such as the geographical location and its legal system. The speech was both inspiring and stimulating, giving us new ideas in adapting to the fast-changing world.

In the second half of the forum, Mr Ronnie Chan shared his thoughts on Hong Kong’s new position in the new world and order. Reflecting from his experience in the business field, Mr Chan suggested that Hong Kong people should endeavour to become more closely associated with China. He stressed that China had become an indispensable body in the global economy. Hence, the earlier Hong Kong people understood the Mainland’s lifestyle and culture, the more likely we could succeed. He also advised us to abandon the arrogance we might once have had, but to sincerely learn from the Mainland. Only then could a win-win scenario be realized.”

Said Keith Kan, “When I first entered the hall, I would never have imagined that this would be such an insightful and inspiring afternoon. If I could summarize the whole forum into one word, I would definitely choose this: China. Both speakers, our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lawrence J. Lau and notable business person Mr Ronnie Chan, stressed that Hong Kong has no other path but to keep on embracing China. What they differed on was how Hong Kong should position herself. China has become one of the largest creditors in the world, like the United States after the two World Wars, and its purchasing power and growing opportunity are infinite. Given this, in Hong Kong, there have been voices advocating entry into China’s service market. However, the government has not done much long term planning about how to embrace this golden chance. Preparing society is not enough.

Therefore, I believe the message of the forum was that whoever wants a fruitful future needs to take action now. While doubts about ‘how to proceed’ still pervade general opinion, people with clearer vision can be the pioneers. Mr Chan made a good point when he was talking about his dinner with his students: the best and brightest should be in China searching for gold, not sitting in Hong Kong dining with him! In this world of turbulence, we need to return to our motherland in search of opportunity.”

    6. Participation in RTHK Radio Programme “New Thinking in Management”
      (a) Topic: E-era

Date : 21 January 2009, Thursday

Henry Keung, Year 1 Global Business Studies student, assisted in the radio programme hosted by Professor Andrew C.F. Chan, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies). The topic of the episode was “E-era”. To listen to the radio programme, you may click http://www.rthk.org.hk/rthk/radio1/NovaManagement/20090125.html.

      Says Henry:

“It was my great honour and pleasure to be invited to attend the recording of this episode of “New Thinking in Management”, titled “E-era”. As my interest in this realm has evolved since childhood, it was absolutely thrilling to be able to personally meet and interact with veterans in the IT field. Encountering Mr Herman Lam, General Manager of Microsoft (Hong Kong), and Mr Davy Ma, General Manager of Media Explorer, was expectedly inspiring but unexpectedly ‘cozy’. Professor Chan and the two guests were not only remarkably knowledgeable; they were also very willing to share their knowledge. Before recording even began, they had already given me plenty of useful advice.

As the recording proceeded, RTHK host Ms Cindy Lau talked about the emergence of the E-era, how it benefitted the government and enterprises, and how it would continue to develop and create more value for the human race. The discussion was filled with good examples and the flow was exceptionally smooth. The only problem was that they had too much to share. I was really glad that Professor Chan had asked me to raise questions during the recording and actually took my points to the table for discussion. It’s amazing to listen to experts answering your queries.

All in all, the recording was a fruitful experience and the insights were very inspiring. The power of innovation, the importance of humanity in the E-era and the unlimited application potential of technology are the key messages I took away from the programme. These messages will certainly become integrated into my thinking. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest gratitude to CUBA, Professor Chan, and Ms Amy Mak for the kind invitation and Mr Herman Lam, Mr Davy Ma and Ms Cindy Lau for their invaluable sharing.”

      (b) Topic: How to Protect Cultural Heritage?

Date : 13 February 2009, Friday

Ray Chua, Integrated BBA Programme Year 2 student, attended the RTHK radio programme. The guest speaker of the episode was Professor Bernard Lim, JP, FHKIA, Professor of Department of Architecture of CUHK. The episode is available at http://www.rthk.org.hk/rthk/radio1/NovaManagement/20090215.html.

      (c) Topic: Golf & Management

Date : 19 February 2009, Thursday

SKiki Shek, Integrated BBA Programme Year 2 student, attended the radio programme hosted by Professor Andrew C.F. Chan, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies). Below is Kiki’s reflection:

How can golf be related to management? I asked this question the day before the programme. But now, I am inextricably bogged down in thoughts of golf, which turned out to be a fascinating and psychologically healthy social activity.

Throughout the discussions between Professor Chan, a management expert, Dr Chan, an experienced professional and Mr Albert Au, a respected golf player, I learnt to appreciate golf. Not only can it connect people together to enjoy the beauty of nature, it can also help with one to grow through challenges.

As Professor Chan said, "A small discrepancy leads to a great error." This matches perfectly with what Dr Chan noted: "A straw shows which way the wind blows."

With the current financial turmoil, we should stay focused and search for the small clues that tell us what is coming afterwards so as to be well-prepared. Concerning work and life, haste brings no success. Like Tiger Woods, I will learn to focus on the ‘match’ of a lifetime instead of merely a plateful of it. And I will also bear things with equanimity as well as thinking thrice before acting. This was not the first time since I joined the programme. Frankly speaking, I found it even more inspirational and am looking forward to further opportunities.

    7. Undergraduate Mentorship Programme

Date : 19 December 2008, Friday
Mentor : Ms Cindy Chan, Head of Administration, Clothing Industry Training Authority, HKSARG
Mentee : TWong Wan Keung Francis, Quantitative Finance Year 3

Wong Wan Keung Francis, who is a student participant of the Undergraduate Mentorship Programme, is pleased talk about his first meeting with his mentor:

“It was an unforgettable experience the first time I saw Cindy.

She has a number of responsibilities, including her teaching job at City University and being the mentor of a dozen mentees. Any one of her roles would be difficult for the average person. However, she still managed to squeeze time in to have lunch with me and another mentee, show us around her workplace and tell us about the development of the garment industry in Hong Kong. It was a brand new experience to us.

I still wonder how she manages to do everything so well. Her time-management skills are definitely remarkable. She also shared with us her attitude and philosophy towards her work. If you are not capable of managing your own tasks, you cannot mean to stay at your position. I found her insight impressive. After all, the more you give, the more you take.

I am looking forwards to seeing Cindy again and learning more about the story behind her success."

    8. Dining Etiquette Workshop

Date : 20 January 2009, Tuesday
Time : 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Venue : The Harbourview, Wanchai

A workshop aimed at cultivating students with proper dining etiquette was arranged on 20 January. In the workshop, the trainer showed students techniques and rules for what to do during a business dinner. Ma Chui Shuen Shannon, Integrated BBA Year 4, who participated in the workshop, tells us what she learned:

"It has been my pleasure to learn from Mr Raymond Chan. He was very professional and has much experience in the catering industry. One of the most valuable lessons I have learnt from him was about the mentality of different diners, restaurant staff or even interviewers (who also count as diners) at the dining table, since understanding what others need is truly the first step to behaving in an appropriate manner. And he was great fun as a trainer — what a challenge it was to get us the roast chicken as the main dish! Like he said, having overcome this dish, we will be much more confident cutting all the easier dishes. Everyone near me had great difficulty but great fun struggling with the chicken, and we all laughed at the idea of massaging our sore hands back at home. All in all it was a fun, insightful and practical workshop which should be taken by every business student, or even by everyone, as Raymond suggested."

    9. Talking to CEOs (organized by EMBA Programme of CUHK)

An alumnus of CUBA, Mr Jeffrey Hui, attended the CEO Talk hosted by the EMBA Programme of CUHK. Below is his reflection:

“’Thought-provoking’ is the best adjective that I can use to describe the “Talking to CEOs”.

Mr Alfred Tsoi’s enthusiasm and passion in career and life are most admirable. From Mr Tsoi’s invaluable sharing, I have come to learn more about how a top-notch CEO thinks, embraces challenges, motivates his co-workers and manages a business. What impressed me most was Mr Tsoi’s sharing of his salesmanship experiences at IBM! Mr Tsoi did give us a most inspiring illustration about how these precious experiences contributed to his later successes in career and life!

Thanks again for your most generous sharing about the keys to successes, Mr Tsoi! It does serve as the most encouraging reinforcement for the coming strategic moves in my career journey! I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to CUBA, CUHK EMBA programmes and Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan, for giving me such a golden opportunity to learn from Mr Tsoi, the great business guru!”
