"I was honoured to be granted the chance to meet Dr Y.C. Chow, Mr Ray Cheung, Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan, Ms Claudia Choi and Mr Stephen Li on the afternoon of 4th September, 2008. I had no previous experience with this kind of business meal, and I expected the atmosphere to be serious and formal. However, to my surprise, everyone was friendly, and the casual conversations we had taught me how to look at the business world from a new perspective.
Dr Chow, Chairman & Managing Director of Chevalier International Holdings Ltd., despite being a man of very high rank, was in fact easy to converse with. He gave me a lot of insights as to how to become a good leader. Being authoritative does not necessarily mean being serious and severe. Besides work, Dr Chow also has a lot of hobbies, and from what I heard, he balances his work and leisure time very well.
Another thing I learnt is that the business world is not all about money. There are people, like Mr Ray Cheung (General Manager of NEC), who are willing to help others from the bottom of their hearts. They are willing to help their business partners, and even people who they have no direct connection with, for example, a friend’s student. I am amazed that there are such people even in the business world, which many consider an area high in conflict.
Meeting people who have had real experience in the world in which I am soon to enter was indeed a very rewarding experience. All of the people I met taught me something in one way or another. I hope that very soon I will be granted a similar chance again." |

| |
Mandy Lai Yu Ching, Integrated BBA Year 4, attended the RTHK Radio Programme "New Thinking in Management" on 31 August 2008, while Kwong Hei Man Biana (Integrated BBA, Year 3) and Au Ip Ling Grace (Integrated BBA, Year 4), attended the Radio Programme on 8 September 2008. The guest speaker of the Programme on 8 September was Prof. Paul Lee, Dean of the Faculty of Social Science and Professor, School of Journalism and Communication. |
| |
| |
Said Biana, "I am glad that I was given a precious opportunity to participate in an interesting and inspiring radio programme "New Thinking in Management" . The topic on that day is "Media Ethics" . Participating in this programme allowed me to observe the flow of radio programme production including the pre-meeting , on-air production and editing. In addition, I gained insights in the media industry and had a good opportunity to enhance my own analytical skill and critical thinking.
I was impressed by Prof Andrew C.F. Chan´s creative speeches and sense of humour and Prof Lee’s professional knowledge when they exchanged ideas on some controversial issues related to media industry. I would like to express my gratitude to CUBA for giving me this valuable chance to learn, to further equip myself and to gain a broader exposure for my future development."

CUHK Team |
| |
| |
The CUHK team described the competition a wonderful learning experience. "Our team enjoyed the time in Thailand working on the case. Though we didn't make it to the final round, the competition was indeed very rewarding. For most of the team members, this was indeed the first time we worked on case analysis and participated in an international case competition. The process required us to integrate what we had learnt in different fields of business and provide a comprehensive solution to the case company. Tackling the case in this way can be deemed as one of the best ways to consolidate what we have learnt in our study.
Besides, working with the team intensively before and during the competition enabled us to share our ideas with each other. Discussing, supporting and defending different points of view have been vital in generating great ideas. In short, we all agreed that this case competition has been very fruitful for all of us as a learning experience as well as building network with other undergraduates." |

A group of 15 year 1 Global Business Studies students were given a chance to understand the business environment and culture of Japan through the study trip to Osaka. The companies visited included The Entrepreneurial Museum of Challenge and Innovation - Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hong Kong Tourism Board (Osaka Office), Osaka International Convention Centre, Panasonic Centre Osaka, Toyota City. The students explored the management philosophies and operations of select companies and organizations there, and used this valuable chance to find out the similarities and differences in culture between Hong Kong and Japan. |

Below is the reflection of Mr Steven Chan: |
| |
| |
"The August orientation trip to Osaka was an invaluable and eye-opening experience for a freshman like me. The trip consists of visits to five organizations, namely the Entrepreneurial Museum of Challenge and Innovation of Osaka, Toyota City, Panasonic headquarters in Osaka, Grand Cube Osaka (a convention and exhibition centre) and the office of Hong Kong Tourism Board. No doubt it is impressive to have witnessed the whole production process of a motor vehicle in Toyota and to have a first-hand trial of the latest AV products in Panasonic. Yet what we got go far beyond these. The keys to the success of the companies were articulated throughout the visits, say for example the famous just-in-time production system of Toyota.
Besides, despite the prevalence of environment friendliness and corporate social responsibility around the world, it still surprised me when I understood what Toyota and Panasonic have been doing in these two fields. They devoted a large portion of their profits in R&D to develop more environmentally friendly products and are constantly working on "greener" designs of which recycling is made easier. Being the leading companies by most standards their efforts tell how the sustainability issue has been lying at the core of business practices.
All these first-hand experience to the renowned systems in the world could never be acquired through classroom learning. In short, I am glad to have such an invaluable opportunity to have a glimpse of what global business is about. This memorable trip is definitely the first step of learning around the globe." |
