A group of 15 Year 1 Global Business Studies, led by Prof. Gordon Cheung (Programme Director of Global Business Studies), went to Singapore for the study trip in mid-May.  The students visited several giant corporations in Singapore and observed the corporations’ management styles and operations.  This trip not only allowed the students to probe the business strategies adopted by the corporations but also reinforced their business knowledge learnt in the classroom.

The corporations the students visited included:
- Singapore Airlines
- O.B. International Pte Ltd (Fish & Co.)
- Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Singapore)
- Eu Yan Sang International Ltd
- Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB)

We sincerely thank the above corporations for their kind and unreserved support to the students’ study trip to Singapore.

Donald Wong, one of the participants, said, “I have many fond memories from the trip to Singapore. Among the various company visits, I was most impressed by the chance to see Fish & Co and Eu Yan Sang. At Fish & Co, a Singaporean-based restaurant, we discussed the issues that it faced when entering the Hong Kong market with its executive. It really was an amazing experience to be able to talk them about business and exchange ideas. The highlight of the visit to Eu Yan Sang was meeting with the CEO of the company. We were so eager to learn from him and understand his business that we asked all kinds of questions. His mastery of the market and vision inspired me to embrace the stake holders involved in business and think more about the future of any business development.”

      - Sze Mo Ting Sara, BBA-JD Year 1 student, participated in the recent episode of “Talking to CEOs V”.  The episode’s guest speaker was Mr Ronald Arculli (夏佳理太平紳士), GBS, CVO, OBE, JP, Chairman of Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing Ltd.

Below is Sara’s reflection:

“Who Moved My Cheese?” This was the book recommended by Mr Ronald Arculli in the new series of “Talking to CEOs V”, a programme co-organized by CUHK EMBA, RTHK and Cable TV. In the ever-changing financial market, it is crucial to be able to respond to changes. Mr Arculli said that to monitor change, we have to anticipate it and change before it does.

Having grown up in a single-parent family, Mr Arculli was subsidized by relatives to study Law in the United Kingdom. To ease the family’s financial burden, he managed to graduate within two years and become a barrister. He has worked in Sun Hung Kai & Co. Limited, Woo Kwan Lee & Lo and opened his own law firm recently. He told us that law and finance are inseparable; the prosperous financial market is fundamentally supported by the comprehensive legal system in Hong Kong. What he said has assured me that I have chosen the right course to study, one in which I will get knowledge in both business and law.  As an outstanding leader, he also contributed his efforts to society by joining the LegCo in 1988. With determination and professionalism, Mr Arculli was hailed as “The King of Bills”.

I am grateful for this valuable opportunity to meet Mr Arculli with other EMBA students. I have learned a lot through the interesting conversations between Mr Arculli, Prof. Andrew Chan and Ms. Echo Wai (the host of the episode).

    8. CUBA Elite Mentorship Programme

Jamie Chiu, Integrated BBA Year 2 student, joined the CUBA Elite Mentorship Programme. She is the mentee of Ms Leonie Ki, SBS, JP, the Managing Director of New World China Enterprises Projects Limited and the Director of New World First Bus Services Ltd.  Below is Jamie’s reflection after joining the Mentorship Programme:

“‘I expect my mentees to be proactive, sensitive and loving student leaders’ – this statement, made by my beloved mentor, Ms Leonie Ki, has always been a good reminder to me to keep improving myself.

I was utterly exhilarated once I was informed of the news - ‘Congratulations! You have been selected as one of the elite mentees’ A frisson of delight immediately shot through me as I understood that this was a once-in-a-life time experience to learn from the most outstanding business leader of our society in such a close manner.

Even before the official opening of the programme, I have already been granted a chance to privately chat with Ms Ki. I realize that she is an inspiring figure who has been actively involved in providing guidance to a number of mentees from the University of Hong Kong for years. Regular mentee gatherings are hosted in her home, as she believes that networking between mentees is essential for knowledge sharing and broadening our horizons towards matters outside our disciplines. Topics such as career goals, choices of study and interesting issues in life were all discussed during our casual and lively meeting.

It is a custom for Ms Ki’s new mentee to bear the responsibility of organizing the regular meeting. During April, it was my turn to help facilitate a service trip to Ocean Park. Mentees were given the duty to accompany the children from the Children’s Care Foundation and their family throughout the visit. Ms Ki was so kind and generous in sponsoring the whole event and invited the children to experience their first trip to the Park. She has genuinely demonstrated the virtue of an outstanding society leader by giving love and concern to the needy. She teaches us to enlighten people’s lives with our care and count our blessings every day. The laughter and joy shared among the family and the big smiles that lit up the children’s faces were the best present for all the mentees.

As I remembered, Ms Ki was once determined to be a teacher. Although her dream has not come true, she has already been the greatest influence in her mentees’ life. She has moved and inspired us through her sincere attitude towards everyone and her concern towards society. It is really my pleasure to learn so much from her!”

Chan, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies), shared with the faculty members the experience derived from his attendance in the mock interview sessions held in early April and the points to note when attending the actual meetings with the QAC Audit Panel.
