A group of student delegates from the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong in June.       A group of six business students (coming from the Global Business Studies, BBA-JD, Quantitative Finance and Insurance, Financial and Actuarial Programmes) who enrolled in the Champion Apprentice Programme participated in summer internships at Champion Technology Ltd in July 2008. They were given a valuable chance to observe the operation of the company, and to put theories they learnt in the classroom into practice. On behalf of the students, we express our heartfelt appreciation to Mr Paul Kan, CBE, JP (簡文樂先生), Chairman and Founder of Champion Technology for offering such precious internship opportunities to our students.

Below are some thoughts about the internship experience from Polly Wong, Global Business Studies Year 1 student:
"It has been quite an unforgettable experience joining this novel internship program in which I was held responsible for updating the database of a collection of antiques and preparing for a public exhibition about the renowned artist Henry Matisse. I have been granted an opportunity to have access to a huge collection of antique books, ranging from Bibles printed a century ago to authentic works of calligraphy and drawings by famous artists. The working environment was very relaxing and I did enjoy the chance to get a taste of art and culture in this internship which was really beyond my expectations. I would also like to take this chance to express my heartfelt gratitude to Mr Paul Kan, CBE, JP, our mentor, for his kind offer and his guidance throughout this year.”

    3. GLOBE Study Trip

Date: 5 – 13 July 2008
Venue: Tokyo and Osaka, Japan

The second cohort of GLOBE students, comprising 15 students from the Global Business Studies Programme of CUHK, 14 students from the Copenhagen Business School and 15 students from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, participated in the Asia Study Trip in July. They went to Tokyo and Osaka and visited companies in the banking, electronics and entertainment industries, as well as others. In addition seeing firsthand the business operations and management styles in the companies, the students also observed the Japanese culture during the study trip.

Oliver Chan, Global Business Studies Year 2, shares about the study trip:

Another fruitful summer thanks to GLOBE! This study trip was arranged under the course BBA0410. The 44 of us — 15 from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 15 from the University of North Carolina and 14 from the Copenhagen Business School, were separated into two teams — A and B, while at the same time, small groups of three were formed, each assigned a certain company to visit during the trip. In the trip, each of us had the opportunity to visit 9 to 10 Japanese companies. These companies were very different from each other. For example, there were electronic product companies like Panasonic and Canon; NPOs like Kansai Economic Federation and International Business Organization of Osaka; banks like Japan Bank of International Cooperation and Bank of Japan; and even theme parks like Universal Studios Japan — it’s a shame that we could not spend a whole day there! Other than going to presentations and interesting exhibitions where we tried many amazing new products, we also attended some talks about Japan’s economy. Everyone enjoyed the trip a lot and I am sure we have all learnt a lot about Japanese business and culture!

    4. Goldman Sachs Global Leadership Institute

Joanne Man, Professional Accountancy Year 2 student, received the Goldman Sachs Global Leader Award (2008-2009) and was selected to join the Goldman Sachs Global Leadership Institute in New York this summer.

Joanne says,"It was so wonderful to interact with other Goldman Sachs Global Leaders from more than 20 countries and learn about Leadership for Advancing Economic Development and Social Progress in the Age of Globalization. All the guest speakers and student participants were outstanding and charismatic. We inspired and learned from each other during the week. We also had a tour around the United Nations Headquarters, watched a Broadway show and did some shopping around Times Square.”

    5. Global Business Studies Annual Dinner

Date: 17 July 2008
Venue: University Guesthouse

Global Business Studies students organized their Annual Dinner on 17 July with the multiple goals of warmly congratulating the first cohort of graduates, welcoming Year 2 students who had just come back from Denmark, bidding farewell to Year 1 and 2 students heading to Denmark and the US, respectively, in August, and acquainting new entrants with the entire family. A representative from each cohort of Global Business Studies was selected to share what they learned and gained. The sharing of each representative was remarkable and impressive, and allowed students of different years to learn from other cohorts: the graduates shared tips regarding the job-seeking process, the Year 2 students shared about their amazing learning experience in Denmark, the Year 1 students shared about the differences between studying in university and secondary school, and the new entrants shared their excitement of being admitted to the programme and their expectations. The event ended with a happy group photo-taking session.

George Lam, Year 3 student of Global Business Studies, shares his reflections:
"Three years ago, our programme started with only 15 students and we never imagined we would be able to have a dinner with more than 50 students in attendance. Seizing the opportunity to meet together, while all batches of GBS students were in Hong Kong at the same time, we were grateful to be able to organize the GBS Annual Dinner. It's heartening to see that the dinner has served as a platform for different cohorts to gather and learn from each other. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all GBS students great success in their work, a wonderful exchange experience in Denmark or the US and a fruitful life in the university.

Last but not least, heartfelt thanks to Prof. Andrew Chan, Prof. Gordon Cheung, Ms Melina Iu and Ms Michele Tang for sharing the cherished time with us.”

Two Year 2 Integrated BBA students, Chau Yee Ling Elaine and Lee Chun Wang, joined Quantum Apprentice 2008 and won the Grand Award, Client Satisfaction Award, and Outstanding Presentation Award. Our heartiest congratulations to them!
