Let's hear some feedback from a Global Business Studies student:

"The high table dinner was so fruitful and enjoyable, and I learned a lot from it. The talk by Mike Rowse gave me a clearer picture of the comparative advantages of Hong Kong relative to its counterparts like Mainland China and Singapore. Mr. Rowse introduced his job of promoting Hong Kong for foreign investment. His sharing was so interesting and increased our firsthand knowledge about the opportunities and challenges that Hong Kong faces in regards to attracting foreign investment.  During the dinner, Mr. Rowse continued to share his valuable experiences and even showed us his family photos. He pointed out the importance of being passionate about Hong Kong. As Hong Kong citizens, we should love Hong Kong, and work together to make Hong Kong more prosperous.

Though the preparation work for the high table dinner was more than what I expected, its success gave me great satisfaction. I was glad to have this opportunity to participate in the preparation, and become familiar with the details of organizing a high table dinner. It was a meaningful activity for all three cohorts of the Global Business Studies students to gather and share experiences," said Karen Chau, year-1 Global Business Studies student.

    3. CUBA Undergraduate "Heart to Heart Talk" on 18 January 2008

Topic: Business and Law: Blending the Best of Two Worlds
Venue: University Guesthouse

We were pleased that Ms. Eirene Yeung, CUHK alumna of the EMBA Programme and MSc Programme in Finance, accepted our invitation and came to CUHK to deliver a talk.  The group attending the talk was a mix of BBA-JD students and other students of CUBA.  Ms. Yeung shared her real-life cases with our students to demonstrate how business and law elements interact with each other in the real business world, and how her business and legal educational backgrounds help her in her career.

Let's hear the feedback of Grace Chu, year-1 BBA-JD student:

"It has been our honour to have Ms Eirene Yeung as our guest speaker in the Heart-to-Heart Talk. There might have been occasions in the past where one would just listen to a high profile speaker, but never was there such a small group of students allowing us to actually interact with the speaker personally.

It was particularly useful for us BBA-JD students to hear the sharing from Ms Yeung, who is an expert in both the legal and business fields. She could tell us from her own experience that it is very useful to have legal knowledge in doing business. It gives you an advantage when you encounter complicated legal processes – you do not have to rely on a third party.

She reassured me that it is necessary, and indeed, a bonus, to take the Juris Doctor (JD)  programme. In fact, I have always wondered whether I want to be in the business or legal field, but Ms Yeung's viewpoint gave me a good idea: in the business field you get to know the complete process of your work, but in the legal field, you are probably only involved in the legal process. This was in line with my original idea, which was to work in the business field with extra legal knowledge. I am sure blending the two expertises will give me a competitive edge in society.

Another bonus of this Heart-to-Heart Talk was that we actually had dinner together with Ms Yeung. We had abundant time to share our thoughts on not only the business world, but also views on other parts of life. We certainly do not get such chances in a normal 100-person seminar. I believe it is always fruitful to listen to successful people talking about how they live their lives, because they must have exceptional principles, values or habits that make them outstanding."

    4. CUBA Undergraduate "Heart to Heart Talk" on 23 January 2008

Guest speaker: Mr. Lee Ming Kwai, Dick (李明逵先生), Former Commissioner of Police (Alumnus of History, New Asia College, 1972)
Topic: Leadership in the New Era

    6. BBA-JD Field Trip

A field trip was arranged for BBA-JD students on 3 January 2008 to widen their exposure to the business and legal worlds.  We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the following people for their support for this function, and their valuable sharing and advice to the students.
  • Mr. Rocky Lok, Vice President - Greater China, Finance, IT and M&A, Carlsberg Brewery Hong Kong Limited (EMBA alumnus, 2003)
  • Mr. Vincent Leung, Manager Regional Strategy & Business Development, Strategy, Propositions & Channels Asia-Pacific, Commercial Banking, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (EMBA alumnus, 2006)
  • Mr. Victor Hing-Wah Lok, Solicitor, Lok Hing Wah & Co. Solicitors (MBA alumnus, 1992)

All BBA-JD students found the trip enjoyable and meaningful.  Let's hear the words of Sunny Chow, a year-1 BBA-JD student:

"While everyone was still enjoying their semester break in early January, BBA-JD students commenced the "academic term" in a  unique style.   The field trip consisted of a company visit, a heart-to-heart talk, and a visit to the High Court.  The company visit to Carlsberg focused on Carlsberg's business and legal framework in China.  Through an inspiring presentation by Mr. Rocky Lok, Vice President of Carlsberg Greater China, about Carlsberg's carving out a niche in China, I have learnt that business is actually an art. It is the fusion of scholastic knowledge with the intelligence of mankind. When you run a business in an ever-changing world, every second is in fact a brand new challenge.

After the company visit, we had a heart-to-heart dialogue with Mr. Vincent Leung, Manager Regional Strategy & Business Development, Strategy, Propositions & Channels Asia-Pacific, Commercial Banking, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.  Mr. Leung is currently taking the JD programme (Juris Doctor programme) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.  He shared about his views on why a JD qualification is necessary and how it can help us to develop our careers in the future.

We ended our day with a High Court visit.  Mr. Victor Lok, Solicitor of Lok Hing Wah & Co., explained how the legal world operates and how law was related to business.
The trip captured the essence of the real business world, enriched me with knowledge beyond the books, and developed my business and legal sense."

    7. Students' Participation in Live Radio Broadcast "New Thinking in Management"

      - Two Integrated BBA students, Dennis Ngan and Fanny Cheung, assisted during the RTHK Radio interview with Ms. Sophie Kao (高靜芝女士), Chairperson of the Women's Commission on 11 January 2008. 2nd and 3rd left: Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan and Ms. Sophie Kao

Fanny Cheung has the following feedback after the RTHK Radio interview:

"I was really honored to participate in the radio recording with Prof. Chan and Ms. Kao. It was a great eye-opener and has enabled me to look at women's affairs in Hong Kong with a deeper and broader perspective.

Women, an important and integral part of our society, have been gaining increasing power and attention in recent decades. Realizing where the bottleneck is, the Women's Commission has been tackling the issues with great effort, and it is a pleasure to know that it is making good progress. The session has given me great inspiration and challenged me to reexamine the conventional perception of genders, and the role which each shoulder. It is important to be able to learn from traditional wisdom, yet not to be hindered at the same time. Furthermore, the future projects and directions raised have crucial implications for the development of Hong Kong, and indeed are very appropriate and cost-efficient solutions to many social problems which we are facing right now.

The preparation for the recording was also an interesting experience – from researching the background, to meeting to discuss the materials to be covered on the recording day – I was amazed to see how a radio programme was arranged in order to make use of precious air time to present the ideas to the audience. I hope the audience enjoyed the session as much as I did, and was able to recognize the importance of the collaborations between the two genders for the construction of a harmonious society."

    8. Article in the Hong Kong Economic Journal (信報)

An inspiring talk delivered by Mr. Peter Wong Tung Shun, JP (王冬勝先生), the Group General Manager and Executive Director of HSBC, during the CUBA Faculty Tea Reception for Freshmen, was published in the Hong Kong Economic Journal.  Mr. Peter Wong shared with the students his university life and gave advice to the first-years on how to prepare themselves to meet with the challenges in the new millennium.
